You have selected a caterer – good for you! You also asked for a quick meeting - which they are willing to have with. Trouble is, you don’t know what to ask. Luckily, here are 5 basic questions you can ask a caterer before you sign any contract and pay the down payment. List these questions down so you can have a cheat sheet for the meeting.
Caterers provide food and when food are not prepared the right way, it’s a recipe for trouble. The reason why you ask this is because license means they have met local health department standards, If they have the right licenses then you can be assured of the quality of their food. Aside from that, license also means they carry liability insurance.
Any establishment, catering service provider included, needs to have this type of insurance. Instances wherein alcohol suddenly becomes the official language of the party sometimes happen – and it reeks of trouble. When this happens and something wrong comes up (e.g. injury, damage to property) you as the host will not be held responsible.
This is essential especially if the event you’re planning is a specialised one. This is a good question to ask just so the caterer can set their minds on what you’re expecting from them. This question will also let them prepare ahead of time especially if it’s a rare and difficult request.
Some catering service providers will only handle food and, at the very least, cutlery. Ask this question so you would know ahead of time if they can or cannot do table setting and décor. Fortunately most caterers do provide table setting and décor but still ask to be sure.
If you’re still having second thoughts with the caterer, you can always ask them if they have references from previous clients. Have at least two references and contact them. The insights you will gather from the references will help you decide on whether pushing through with the caterer or not.
